Summary | 0000494: "Getting Started/Installation" Documention is Desperately Needed
Description | It is terrific that Endian have an Administrators Guide available in the Getting Help/Documentation; however, an installation guide is very much needed in order to fulfill the goal of "easy to install." Without this documentation, I am afraid endian is neither "turn-key" nor *easy to install.* Many users find Endian via web searches and user referrals -- especially those already using ipcop. Yet the forums show many people have problems with the install of Endian, and this is completely unaddressed in the Administrators Guide. These <potential users> try the install, fail, check forums, and leave for another product.
Additional Information | From the About/Overview page: Endian Firewall Community is a "turn-key" linux security distribution that turns every system into a full featured security appliance. The software has been designed with "usability in mind" and is very *easy to install*, use and manage, without losing its flexibility.

Peter, I would be happy to write a basic getting started/installation help guide if I can get a little experienced installation help to get me started... |

That would be very cool!! And of course very helpful for people, since we have sometimes requests how to proceed after/during installation. We had a getting started (back in 1.1rcX times), but it is written in italian only. It had plenty of screenshots and basically a step by step howto install. In the meantime, installation routine changed slightly, we added some steps and removed others, but maybe that doc could be a good starting point. I don't know if it helps you to write one in english, since it is in italian, but here are the sources: http://svn.endian.it/view/documentation/trunk/books/efw-getting-started/ [^] If you are not familiar with DocBook, i can build it for you in order to provide it in html. And if you are not familiar with DocBook and don't like to learn it, there is certainly no problem if you write in whatever format you like. We will convert and layout it then in DocBook. |
